Flame Moss

Flame Moss is one of the most visually distinctive and immediately recognizable aquarium mosses available — an Asian species whose fronds twist and spiral upward in a helical pattern that genuinely resembles rising flames frozen in botanical form. The unique upward spiraling growth creates strong vertical visual interest on hardscape and makes Flame Moss instantly identifiable to experienced aquarists as one of the most unusual growth patterns in the aquatic plant world.

Planting tip: Flame Moss should be attached to driftwood, rock, or mesh with its fronds exposed to the water column. Use cotton thread or aquarium-safe adhesive to secure it, and the plant will anchor itself naturally over time. Good water circulation supports healthy growth.

Like all aquatic mosses, Flame Moss should be attached to driftwood, rock, or mesh. The upward spiraling growth is most impressively displayed on vertical surfaces or the elevated portions of driftwood where the spiraling fronds can grow clearly upward against the background. Thread or aquarium adhesive work for initial attachment. Good water circulation maintains the health and the distinctive spiraling growth orientation.

This easy plant grows under low to moderate lighting with CO₂ optional. Temperatures between 68 and 78°F and a pH of 6.0 to 7.5 provide comfortable conditions. Regular fertilization supports consistent, vigorous spiraling frond production. The flame-like spiraling character is most fully expressed in healthy, well-nourished plants with stable conditions.

In the aquascape, Flame Moss creates bold, upward-spiraling hardscape texture that brings genuine visual energy and vertical movement to driftwood and stone compositions. The spiraling, flame-like fronds create strong directional momentum in the composition — a visual quality unavailable from spreading or drooping mosses. It is particularly effective on prominent elevated driftwood where the upward spiraling emphasizes the sense of height and growth.

Flame Moss is a uniquely structured and immediately recognizable aquarium moss for aquarists who want genuine visual energy and distinctive botanical character in their hardscape compositions. Its spiraling, flame-like frond growth makes it one of the most memorable and visually impactful mosses available for the freshwater aquarium.
