Spiky Moss
Spiky Moss
Spiky Moss is a densely growing Asian aquatic moss with a distinctive, somewhat coarser texture than most aquarium mosses — producing thick, triangular fronds that build into dense, textured clumps with a more substantial, structured appearance than fine-textured mosses like Fissidens or Taiwan Moss. The slightly spiky character of the frond tips gives this moss its name and creates a more robust, visually bold moss coverage compared to delicate fine-textured varieties.
Planting tip: Spiky Moss should be attached to driftwood, rock, or mesh with its fronds exposed to the water column. Use cotton thread or aquarium-safe adhesive to secure it, and the plant will anchor itself naturally over time. Good water circulation supports healthy growth.
Like all aquatic mosses, Spiky Moss should be attached to driftwood or mesh. Its naturally dense growth habit makes it particularly effective on prominent pieces of driftwood and stone where the bold, compact texture creates a visually substantial moss covering. Good water circulation supports healthy growth and the compact, dense frond arrangement. Thread or aquarium adhesive work for initial attachment.
This easy plant grows under low to moderate lighting with CO₂ optional. Temperatures between 68 and 77°F and a pH of 5.5 to 7.5 provide comfortable conditions. Regular fertilization supports the continuous frond production needed for maintaining the dense, compact coverage that characterizes this moss at its best. The wide temperature range reflects genuine thermal adaptability.
In the aquascape, Spiky Moss creates bold, dense hardscape coverage with a slightly coarser, more textured character that suits larger pieces of driftwood and rocks where a more substantial moss presence is desired. The triangular frond texture provides visual mass and depth different from finer mosses. In shrimp tanks the dense growth creates excellent sheltering and grazing habitat.
Spiky Moss is a robust, densely growing aquarium moss for aquarists who want bold, substantial moss coverage with a textured, structured character. Its compact frond density and easy care make it a practical and visually appealing hardscape moss for a wide range of planted aquarium styles.

| Notes | A densely growing Asian moss with thick, distinctive triangular fronds that give it a slightly coarser, more structured texture than most other aquarium mosses. The spiky frond character creates bold, compact coverage on hardscape — especially effective on wood where the density creates a rich, textured surface. |
