Description
Licuala Grandis
Licuala Grandis, commonly called the Ruffled Fan Palm or Vanuatu Fan Palm, is native to the rainforests of Vanuatu and the Solomon Islands in the South Pacific, growing as a small, solitary understory palm beneath the forest canopy. Its glossy, deep green fronds are circular and closely pleated — genuinely unusual among palms — giving the whole plant a sculptural, ruffled-fan appearance that sets it apart at a glance.
Note: as a freshly imported bare-root plant, this specimen typically arrives with just a few leaves — the photo shows a more mature, fuller specimen for reference.
Care tip: Brown leaf tips are extremely common with this species and are almost always a humidity issue, not a watering one — keep humidity around 50%+ and mist regularly rather than reaching for more water first.
Give it bright, indirect light (never direct sun, which scorches the leaves quickly), well-draining, organically rich soil, and water once the top of the soil has dried slightly — this species has a somewhat higher water requirement than many other palms and dislikes drying out fully. It's a genuinely slow grower, reaching full size only after many years, but can live for decades once established. Watch for sharp spines along the petiole edges when handling.
A true collector's palm — its unusual pleated, fan-shaped foliage and unhurried growth make it a long-term investment piece rather than an instant-gratification plant, rewarding patient growers with a genuinely sculptural specimen.
