Queen Arabesque Pleco (L260)

Queen Arabesque Pleco (L260) (Hypancistrus sp. (L260)) displays an intricate arabesque pattern — fine, swirling white lines on a dark background creating an ornate, almost calligraphic pattern across the entire body. Hypancistrus plecos are among the most spectacular loricariids available — their bold patterns, compact size, and fascinating cave-breeding behavior make them premier collector fish.

Feeding & Care Tip: Hikari Sinking Wafers and Hikari Frozen or Freeze-Dried Bloodworms are the primary staple foods — Hypancistrus are carnivorous, not algae eaters. Supplement with Hikari Frozen or Freeze-Dried Baby Brine Shrimp and Hikari Frozen or Freeze-Dried Brine Shrimp. Feed after lights dim when most active. Strong water flow and high oxygenation are important for this group.

Note: Hypancistrus are NOT algae eaters. Despite their pleco classification, Hypancistrus species are primarily carnivorous — they will decline on algae wafer diets. Feed high-protein sinking wafers and frozen meaty foods. They will not control algae and should not be purchased for that purpose.

Native to the fast-flowing, oxygen-rich rivers of the Amazon basin — particularly the Rio Xingu and related drainages. Hypancistrus inhabit rocky crevices in strong current with warm, well-oxygenated water. High temperature (82–86°F), strong flow, and high oxygenation are important for long-term health. Good filtration and regular water changes maintain low nitrates which this group is sensitive to.

Cave spawner — provide PVC tubes or caves sized to fit the fish. Males guard the eggs inside the cave until hatching. One male per cave to avoid conflict. Do not purchase Hypancistrus for algae control — they will not perform this function and require a different diet.

Hypancistrus are rewarding breeding projects for experienced pleco keepers. Warm, well-oxygenated water, high-protein food, and appropriate cave structures are the keys to successful spawning.
