Paradox Toothpick Fish
Paradox Toothpick Fish (Indostomus paradoxus) is one of the most unusual and rarely seen freshwater fish in the hobby — the sole member of its own family Indostomidae, with no close relatives. The needle-thin body — barely 1.5 inches long — and the upright, hovering posture recall a tiny pipefish or sea needle. Males brood eggs in small caves, and the species has a fascinating prehistoric evolutionary lineage classified in its own unique suborder.
⚠ Live Food Required: Paradox Toothpick Fish typically refuse prepared dry foods. Live baby brine shrimp, live Daphnia, live Moina, and copepods are essential. Frozen baby brine shrimp may be accepted by settled individuals but live foods should be the primary diet. Feed multiple times daily in tiny amounts.
Live Food Requirement: Paradox Toothpick Fish require very small live or frozen micro-foods — they typically refuse prepared dry foods. Copepods, live baby brine shrimp, live Daphnia, and Moina are essential. Their tiny mouths require appropriately tiny food particles.
Native to Indawgyi Lake and associated streams in Kachin State, Upper Burma (Myanmar) — a large, isolated highland lake. This species inhabits very shallow, still to slow-moving water with dense aquatic vegetation. A mature, species-specific nano aquarium with established micro-fauna, dense planting, and abundant live food culture is the ideal setup.
Keep in a species-specific setup — any other fish will outcompete this tiny, slow-moving micro-predator for food. A group of six or more is ideal; males spawn inside tiny caves or bamboo sections, guarding the eggs.
The Paradox Toothpick Fish is one of the most extraordinary and rarely kept freshwater fish available. Its unique evolutionary position as the sole member of its family, combined with its remarkable appearance and behavior, makes it a genuine collector's fish of the highest order.
