Neon Blue/ Orange Head Ram

Neon Blue/ Orange Head Ram (Mikrogeophagus ramirezi) displays a vivid neon-blue iridescent body with contrasting orange to red-orange coloration concentrated on the head and face — the 'orange head' that distinguishes this form. The neon blue body against the warm orange face creates a striking color contrast. The German Blue Ram is widely considered one of the most beautiful dwarf cichlids in the freshwater hobby — a small, peaceful, and spectacularly colored fish that rewards the aquarist who provides appropriate warm, soft water conditions.

Feeding & Care Tip: Hikari Micro Pellets and Sera Vipan Baby make excellent daily staples. Supplement 2–3× per week with Hikari Frozen or Freeze-Dried Baby Brine Shrimp, Hikari Frozen or Freeze-Dried Bloodworms, and Hikari Frozen Daphnia — varied frozen foods trigger breeding condition and bring out the best coloration. Feed small amounts 2–3 times daily in a calm environment.

Note on care: Mikrogeophagus ramirezi is not a beginner fish. It requires a mature, cycled aquarium (not new tanks), stable warm temperatures of 78–86°F, soft to moderately soft water, and very low nitrates. Fish kept at standard tropical temperatures of 76°F or below are significantly more susceptible to disease and have shorter lifespans. Regular partial water changes and excellent filtration are essential. The Bolivian Ram (M. altispinosa) is a considerably hardier alternative for aquarists new to the genus.

Native to the Llanos region of Venezuela and Colombia — the vast, seasonally flooded savannahs of the Orinoco River basin. Wild rams inhabit slow-moving, warm, shallow, heavily vegetated pools and streams with sandy substrate and leaf litter. The water is very warm — often 82–86°F — soft, and slightly acidic. A planted aquarium with fine sand, driftwood, leaf litter, and subdued lighting replicates their natural environment and produces the most relaxed, vividly colored fish.

Keep as a bonded pair or in a small group with adequate territory. Rams are flat surface spawners — they clean a smooth patch of substrate or a flat stone, deposit eggs, and both parents guard the eggs and fry with impressive dedication. During breeding, even these small fish defend their territory vigorously against all comers. Compatible with small, peaceful tetras, Corydoras, and other community fish that will not disturb the nest.

The German Blue Ram is one of the most stunning dwarf cichlids available — the combination of electric blue iridescence, golden-yellow body, and red eye marking is extraordinary in a fish under 3 inches. In a well-planted aquarium with appropriate water conditions, a bonded pair displaying and spawning is one of the most rewarding experiences in the hobby.
