Leopard Danio

Leopard Danio (Danio frankei) was long classified as a spotted color variant of the Zebra Danio, but genetic analysis confirms it is a distinct species. The body is pale silver to gold with a scattering of small dark spots across the flanks — a leopard or dalmatian pattern replacing the horizontal stripes of its relative. The activity level, hardiness, and personality are identical to the Zebra Danio.

Feeding & Care Tip: Sera Vipan Tropical Flakes and Hikari Micro Pellets make excellent daily staples. Supplement 2–3× per week with Hikari Frozen or Freeze-Dried Bloodworms or Hikari Vibra Bites to enhance color and condition. Hikari Frozen or Freeze-Dried Baby Brine Shrimp are an excellent additional treat. Feed small amounts 2–3 times daily. A tight-fitting lid is strongly recommended — danios are enthusiastic jumpers.

The wild origin of Danio frankei is not definitively established — some sources treat it as a wild species from India, others suggest it may be a very old captive mutation from D. rerio that has been maintained in the trade for so long it is now considered distinct. The care and habitat preferences mirror the Zebra Danio completely.

Keep in groups of at least five. The Leopard Danio can be mixed freely with Zebra Danios and other Danio species in a single school — the different species school together readily and the mix of spots and stripes in one group is particularly attractive.

Danios are prolific and easy egg-scatterers that spawn with little encouragement in a well-maintained aquarium. Males chase females vigorously before spawning among fine-leaved plants or over the substrate. Eggs and fry receive no parental care — adults will eat eggs if given the chance. For intentional breeding, a separate shallow tank with spawning mops or fine-leaved plants, slightly warmer water, and removal of adults after spawning is straightforward and reliable. The Leopard and Zebra Danio will interbreed if kept together — if keeping a pure Leopard Danio line is important, keep them separate.
