Lampeye Killifish
Lampeye Killifish (Poropanchax normani) is one of the most charming and unusual nano killifish available — instantly recognizable by the iridescent, reflective upper eye that glows an intense silver-blue under aquarium lighting. In a group, the simultaneous flash of many pairs of glowing eyes creates a genuinely mesmerizing effect. The pale, almost transparent body keeps the focus entirely on those extraordinary eyes.
Feeding & Care Tip: Hikari Micro Pellets make an excellent daily staple for this nano species. Supplement 2–3× per week with Hikari Frozen or Freeze-Dried Baby Brine Shrimp and Hikari Frozen Daphnia. Feed small amounts — this is a tiny fish with a tiny mouth. Multiple small daily feedings work better than one large feeding.
Native to West Africa — Nigeria, Ghana, Cameroon, and surrounding areas. A non-annual killifish from permanent slow-moving streams, pools, and swampy areas with dense vegetation. The reflective eye layer is a genuine biological feature — a tapetum lucidum that improves low-light vision, similar to the eye-shine of cats.
Keep in groups of at least ten — the Lampeye is a schooling killifish that is far more impressive and active in numbers. The glowing eye effect is most striking when a whole group flashes together. Compatible with other very small, peaceful species — nano rasboras, small tetras, Sparkling Gouramis. Keep away from any predatory fish.
Breeding is straightforward compared to annual killifish — eggs are deposited on plants, spawning mops, or fine substrate and receive no parental care. Remove eggs or fry to a separate container to prevent predation. No dry period is required — eggs can be incubated in water. A long-lived and reliable nano killifish for planted aquariums. The eye-shine under a directional aquarium light is one of the most distinctive and beautiful effects available in a small fish.
