Goyder River Rainbow
Goyder River Rainbow (Melanotaenia trifasciata) is a locality form of the Banded Rainbowfish from the Goyder River in the Northern Territory of Australia. Melanotaenia trifasciata is one of the most variable rainbowfish species — different river populations can look dramatically different. The Goyder River form is known for particularly vivid coloration, with males showing deep red, orange, and blue-green iridescence.
Feeding & Care Tip: Sera Vipan Tropical Flakes and Hikari Micro Pellets make excellent daily staples. Supplement 2–3× per week with Hikari Frozen or Freeze-Dried Bloodworms to enhance the vivid male coloration. Crush flakes for juveniles; soak pellets.
The Goyder River flows through the Northern Territory of Australia into the Gulf of Carpentaria. As with all M. trifasciata populations, this form inhabits clear, well-oxygenated streams and rivers with rocky substrate. It is more adaptable to varied water conditions than many Papuan rainbows.
Keep in groups of at least six with mixed sexes. Males display actively. Locality designations in this species are taken seriously by collectors — the Goyder River form has its own distinct color pattern and should not be crossbred with other trifasciata populations to preserve locality integrity.
A well-planted aquarium with open swimming space in the center replicates the rainbowfish's natural riverine habitat. These are active, fast-swimming fish that appreciate length more than height — a longer tank allows them to build up speed and display properly. Good filtration and regular partial water changes are important, as rainbowfish are sensitive to deteriorating water quality. Avoid very small or slow-moving tankmates that may be outcompeted at feeding time.
