Golden Wonder Killifish
Golden Wonder Killifish (Aplocheilus lineatus) is the largest killifish on this list and one of the most striking — a robust, streamlined fish with a vivid golden-yellow to greenish body covered in iridescent scale rows that shimmer as the fish moves. The 'Golden Wonder' is a captive-developed golden color form of the Indian/Sri Lankan Striped Panchax. Males develop particularly vivid coloration with bright yellow-gold scales and orange-red fin edging.
Feeding & Care Tip: Hikari Micro Pellets and Sera Vipan Tropical Flakes make good daily staples. Supplement 2–3× per week with Hikari Frozen or Freeze-Dried Bloodworms, Hikari Frozen or Freeze-Dried Baby Brine Shrimp, or Hikari Vibra Bites. This is a surface predator — it takes food from the surface readily. Feed a varied diet to maintain the vivid golden coloration.
The wild form (Aplocheilus lineatus) is native to India and Sri Lanka — slow-moving rivers, ponds, and rice paddies across the subcontinent. The Golden Wonder is a captive-developed golden color form of this species. Non-annual with a lifespan of 3–5 years. A surface predator in nature, it ambushes insects and small vertebrates from just below the surface.
The Golden Wonder has a large, upturned mouth and is a predatory species — any fish small enough to fit in its mouth is potential prey, including nano tetras, small rasboras, and adult shrimp. Keep with fish of at least 2 inches that are too large to be eaten. Can be territorial with its own kind — one male per tank in smaller setups.
Breeding is straightforward compared to annual killifish — eggs are deposited on plants, spawning mops, or fine substrate and receive no parental care. Remove eggs or fry to a separate container to prevent predation. No dry period is required — eggs can be incubated in water. A hardy, long-lived, and visually impressive killifish for medium-sized community aquariums. One of the few killifish large enough to keep with barbs, medium tetras, and similar fish.
