Gold Marble Synodontis
Gold Marble Synodontis (Synodontis schoutedeni) is a strikingly beautiful Synodontis from the Congo River basin with a complex, reticulated pattern of golden-yellow, brown, and black marbling across the body — a painterly pattern unlike most other Synodontis species. The high dorsal fin and robust build give it a powerful, impressive profile. It is considerably less commonly available than most Synodontis species and carries genuine collector appeal.
Feeding & Care Tip: Hikari Sinking Wafers and Hikari Mini Algae Wafers make excellent staples — feed after lights out. Supplement with Hikari Frozen or Freeze-Dried Bloodworms and Hikari Frozen or Freeze-Dried Brine Shrimp 2–3 times per week. Provide caves and driftwood for daytime shelter.
Native to the Congo River and its major tributaries in the Democratic Republic of Congo. The Congo River is one of the deepest and most biodiverse river systems in the world, and S. schoutedeni is one of many remarkable catfish endemic to this system. The golden-marble pattern intensifies with age and good nutrition.
Keep singly or in small groups — Synodontis schoutedeni can be territorial with conspecifics in limited space. A larger aquarium of at least 4 feet with ample hiding spots reduces territorial tension. Compatible with medium to large community fish, African cichlids, and other robust species.
An impressive and underappreciated Synodontis. The golden marble patterning is genuinely unusual in the genus and makes this a standout catfish for aquarists who want something beyond the more commonly kept Synodontis species.
