Dwarf Bumblebee Catfish
Dwarf Bumblebee Catfish (Microsynodontis sp.) is a tiny and charming miniature Synodontis relative from West Africa. The compact, robust body is patterned with dark and pale banding or spotting — a muted bumblebee pattern on a fish that rarely exceeds 2 inches. As the name suggests, this is a significantly smaller version of the bumblebee catfish theme, making it suitable for nano and small community aquariums where larger Synodontis would be inappropriate.
Feeding & Care Tip: Hikari Sinking Wafers and Hikari Mini Algae Wafers crushed and placed near hiding spots make good staples — feed after lights out. Supplement with Hikari Frozen or Freeze-Dried Bloodworms and Hikari Frozen or Freeze-Dried Brine Shrimp 2–3 times per week.
The Microsynodontis genus is a West/Central African group of miniature mochokid catfish closely related to Synodontis. The specific species in the trade is often not precisely identified — most specimens are wild-caught from rivers of Cameroon, Nigeria, or the Congo basin. They inhabit slow-moving, vegetated streams and rivers with leaf litter and woody debris.
Keep in small groups of three or more — more active and visible in company. Suitable for community aquariums with other small, peaceful species. Provide caves, coconut shells, or dense planting for daytime shelter. Largely nocturnal but becomes more active over time as it settles into a well-established aquarium.
A specialist find for aquarists who appreciate unusual West African micro-catfish. Its tiny size, neat banding pattern, and mochokid personality make it a rewarding nano catfish for those who want something beyond the usual Corydoras options.
