Apsara Barb

Apsara Barb (Dawkinsia apsara) is an attractive barb from Southeast Asia with warm silver-orange body coloration and dark markings similar in pattern to the related Mascara Barb. Named for the apsaras — the celestial dancers of Hindu and Buddhist mythology — this species has an elegant, flowing quality to its movement that the name suits well. A peaceful, active schooling fish for medium to large community aquariums.

Feeding & Care Tip: Hikari Micro Pellets and Sera Vipan Tropical Flakes make excellent daily staples. Supplement 2–3× per week with Hikari Frozen or Freeze-Dried Bloodworms or Hikari Vibra Bites. Feed small amounts 2–3 times daily.

Native to Cambodia and Thailand. Dawkinsia apsara is one of the Southeast Asian members of the Dawkinsia genus — geographically and genetically distinct from the Western Ghats Dawkinsia species like D. assimilis and D. filamentosus. Inhabits rivers and streams with clear to moderately turbid water.

Keep in groups of at least six. Active and peaceful, suitable for community aquariums with other medium-sized, non-aggressive species. A tank of at least 3 feet provides adequate swimming space for a proper school.

Egg-scatterer. The Apsara Barb is a rewarding schooling fish whose active behavior and warm coloration make it an attractive addition to a community aquarium. Its Southeast Asian origin distinguishes it from the more commonly encountered Indian Dawkinsia species.
