Alleni Rainbow
Alleni Rainbow (Chilatherina alleni ‘Wapoga’) is a large and beautiful species from the Wapoga River locality of West Papua. Named for ichthyologist Gerald R. Allen — one of the foremost authorities on Australasian freshwater fish. Males develop striking iridescent blue-green and orange-red coloration, with the 'Wapoga' locality designation indicating the specific river population.
Feeding & Care Tip: Sera Vipan Tropical Flakes and Hikari Micro Pellets make excellent daily staples. Supplement 2–3× per week with Hikari Frozen or Freeze-Dried Bloodworms. Crush flakes for juveniles; soak pellets.
Native to the Wapoga River in West Papua, Indonesia. Like other Chilatherina species, this fish inhabits clear, well-oxygenated, fast-flowing rivers. Good water movement and regular partial water changes are important. Needs a spacious aquarium of at least 4 feet.
Keep in groups of at least six with mixed sexes. Males display vigorously with impressive fin and color displays. The Wapoga locality designation is meaningful to collectors. Completely peaceful with other large community fish.
A well-planted aquarium with open swimming space in the center replicates the rainbowfish's natural riverine habitat. These are active, fast-swimming fish that appreciate length more than height — a longer tank allows them to build up speed and display properly. Good filtration and regular partial water changes are important, as rainbowfish are sensitive to deteriorating water quality. Avoid very small or slow-moving tankmates that may be outcompeted at feeding time.
