Description

Red Root Floaters

Red Root Floaters, botanically Phyllanthus fluitans, is a visually striking South American floating plant producing small, rounded leaves with brilliant crimson undersides and vivid red roots hanging below the surface — creating a floating plant of extraordinary visual impact when the color is fully developed. Under strong light the contrast between the green-red leaf tops and the vivid crimson undersides and roots is genuinely breathtaking among floating plants.

Care tip: Red Root Floaters is a floating plant — it grows on the water surface and does not require substrate planting. Maintain temperatures of 72–86°F and avoid strong surface agitation for best growth.

The red coloration develops progressively with increasing light intensity — under low light the plant remains predominantly green, while under strong light the crimson coloration saturates fully across the leaf undersides and along the entire root system. Regular light exposure consistently at the right intensity is the most important factor for maintaining the vivid red display that makes this plant so desirable.

This easy plant grows in moderate to high lighting with CO₂ optional. The temperature range of 72 to 86°F reflects warm-water preference — Red Root Floaters is a tropical species that declines in cooler water. A pH of 6.5 to 7.5 provides comfortable conditions. Regular fertilization, particularly with iron-containing formulas, supports the vivid red root and leaf coloration.

In the aquascape, Red Root Floaters provides a visually spectacular floating surface display whose crimson roots hanging into the water column create an extraordinary visual effect from the front of the aquarium. In photography and competition aquascaping the vivid red roots trailing below the surface create one of the most dramatic surface plant effects achievable. As the chart notes it helps reduce algae by shading the tank — a practical bonus.

Red Root Floaters is one of the most visually dramatic and easily kept floating plants available. Its vivid crimson coloration under strong light creates a floating surface display of extraordinary beauty, and the ease of care makes this spectacular appearance accessible to aquarists at every level.
