Description
Mosaic Plant
Mosaic Plant, botanically Ludwigia sedoides, is one of the most visually spectacular floating aquatic plants available — a South American species producing stunning geometric rosettes of diamond-shaped leaves arranged in a precise mosaic-like lattice pattern of green, yellow, and red. The mathematical precision of the leaf arrangement combined with the multi-colored leaf tones creates a floating plant of extraordinary visual beauty that is immediately recognizable and consistently admired.
Care tip: Mosaic Plant is a floating plant — it grows on the water surface and does not require substrate planting. Maintain temperatures of 72–86°F and avoid strong surface agitation for best growth.
Mosaic Plant grows as a floating rosette that must rest on the water surface or be grown in very shallow water — it is not a submerged plant. Each rosette can grow to 4 to 8 inches across under ideal conditions. The plant requires warm temperatures, bright light, and calm water surface conditions to thrive — surface agitation disrupts the rosette development and stresses the plant. It grows best as a surface plant in aquariums, ponds, or paludariums with still or very gently moving water.
This moderate plant grows in moderate to high lighting. CO₂ is optional. Temperatures between 72 and 86°F reflect the genuine warm-water preference of this tropical South American species — it will not tolerate cold water. A pH of 6.5 to 7.5 provides comfortable conditions. Regular liquid fertilization supports the vigorous, healthy rosette development and the vivid multi-colored leaf expression.
In the aquascape or paludarium, Mosaic Plant creates an immediately striking floating surface display whose geometric, lattice-like rosettes provide a type of visual complexity no other floating plant can match. In large open-top aquariums and ponds it creates a surface display of extraordinary natural beauty. It is most impressive when multiple rosettes develop across the surface, creating an interconnected lattice of geometric floating foliage.
Mosaic Plant is one of the most visually stunning floating aquatic plants in the world. Its geometric leaf mosaic, warm-water requirements, and distinctive botanical character make it a genuinely remarkable and rewarding plant for aquarists who can provide its specific needs.
