Seachem Flourish Excel is a source of bioavailable organic carbon — a "liquid carbon" that lets plants take up carbon without a pressurized CO₂ system. For low-tech and beginner planted tanks, it's a popular way to give plants a meaningful growth boost, and many aquascapers also use it as a targeted spot-treatment against problem algae like black beard algae.
Please Read — important cautions: Excel's active ingredient is glutaraldehyde, a potent compound, and that has two real consequences. First, certain plants are sensitive and can "melt" at full doses — notably Vallisneria, Anacharis, and many mosses, with some keepers seeing issues in Anubias too — so go slow if your scape features these. Second, it must be dosed carefully around shrimp and other invertebrates: overdosing can stress or kill them, so measure precisely and never exceed the label. When in doubt, start at half dose and watch how your tank responds.
It is also not a substitute for the full benefits of pressurized CO₂ in a high-light, high-energy aquascape — it's best understood as a helpful carbon supplement for low- and medium-tech tanks rather than a CO₂ replacement.
Dosing Guidelines: On the first dose (or after a water change of more than 40%), use 1 capful (5 mL) per 10 gallons; thereafter use 1 capful per 50 gallons daily or every other day — so about 1 mL per day in a 10-gallon tank, 2 mL in a 20-gallon. For spot-treating algae, some aquascapers apply it directly with the filter briefly off, always staying within the daily limit.
