Description

Anthurium Clarinervium Baby

Anthurium Clarinervium — offered here as a young "Baby" specimen — commonly called the Velvet Cardboard Anthurium, is native to southern Mexico — specifically the state of Chiapas — where it grows as an epiphyte on limestone outcrops at 800–1,200 meters elevation. Its thick, deeply lobed, heart-shaped leaves have a stiff, cardboard-like texture and a velvety surface, dark green and boldly marked with contrasting white to silvery veins.

Note: as a freshly imported bare-root plant, this specimen typically arrives with just a few leaves — the photo shows a more mature, fuller specimen for reference.

Care tip: This species is often confused with the similar Anthurium crystallinum — the tell is leaf shape and texture: Clarinervium has thicker, rounder, firmer leaves, while Crystallinum's are more elongated and softer.

Give it bright, indirect light (filtered light similar to a forest canopy), high humidity around 70–80%, and a well-draining, chunky mix of bark, peat, and perlite. Water once the top inch or two of soil has dried, and never let it sit in standing water — root rot is the main risk with this species. As a juvenile plant, leaves will still be developing their full mature shape and vein contrast — the deeply lobed, cardboard-textured look intensifies as the plant ages. A small moss pole can help encourage larger leaf development by mimicking its natural epiphytic climbing habit.

One of the most popular and comparatively easy-care members of the "velvet-leaf" Anthurium group — a genus-wide category prized since the late 1800s for dramatic, contrast-veined foliage — this species offers real collector appeal without the fussier reputation of some of its Colombian and Peruvian relatives.
