Description
Alocasia Chaii
Alocasia Chaii was described by P.C. Boyce in 2007 and is known only from a narrow range in Sarawak's Kapit Division — the foothills of Gunung Bukit Batu and the Hose Mountains — growing on steep, leaf-litter-covered clay slopes in the shade of moist hill forest between 540–760 meters. It belongs to the informal Alocasia scabriuscula group, notable for coriaceous, leathery leaves, and remains genuinely obscure even among dedicated Alocasia collectors.
Note: as a freshly imported bare-root plant, this specimen typically arrives with just a few leaves — the photo shows a more mature, fuller specimen for reference.
Care tip: Coming from a narrow, specific mountain habitat, this species rewards a stable setup over frequent adjustment — give it consistent shade-forest conditions rather than bright light.
Its leaves remain peltate (petiole attached inside the leaf margin rather than at the edge) even at maturity, a trait it shares with its closest relative, Alocasia scabriuscula, though Chaii is considerably smaller in overall stature. The spathe turns a distinctive bright magenta at fruiting. Give it a well-draining, humus-rich mix, filtered light, and consistent warmth and moisture typical of its steep forest habitat.
A genuinely rare, narrowly-endemic Sarawak species for collectors specifically seeking out the more obscure corners of Alocasia taxonomy — one of the harder-to-find true species in the genus.
