Description

Alocasia Baginda "Dragon Scale"

Alocasia Baginda was formally described in 2010 by Kurniawan and P.C. Boyce from specimens collected in the lowland rainforests of Kalimantan, Indonesian Borneo, where it grows as a compact, terrestrial rosette. "Baginda" is Malay for "king" or "majesty" — a fitting name for one of the most admired jewel Alocasia in cultivation. This "Dragon Scale" form shows the species at its most dramatic: silvery-green, shield-shaped leaves with a deeply bullate, scale-like texture and bold emerald venation, undersides shifting from deep green to charcoal.

Note: as a freshly imported bare-root plant, this specimen typically arrives with just a few leaves — the photo shows a more mature, fuller specimen for reference.

Care tip: This species is believed to favor calcium-rich, limestone-influenced soils in the wild — a fertilizer with trace calcium, paired with a fast-draining aroid mix, tends to suit it well.

Give it bright, filtered light — the metallic sheen and vein contrast intensify with more light, but direct sun will scorch the foliage. Keep the substrate lightly moist, allowing the top layer to dry between waterings, and maintain 60–80% humidity to prevent browning edges. It's normal for this species to drop leaves seasonally, sometimes all at once, as its compact root system can only support so much foliage at a time — new growth typically follows once conditions stabilize.

One of the most recognizable "jewel" Alocasia in the collector world, prized specifically for its dragon-scale texture — a genuine architectural statement piece for any Indonesian plant collection.
