Zoo Med Betta Mopani Wood is a small piece of natural African mopani hardwood sized specifically for betta tanks and nano aquariums. It adds a natural, characterful centerpiece and gives a betta visual interest and cover, while gently releasing tannins that recreate the soft, slightly blackwater conditions wild bettas come from — conditions that can help bettas show their best color and behavior.
Good to Know: The tannins mopani releases tint the water a light tea color and gently soften and acidify it, which is genuinely beneficial for bettas (they're native to soft, tannin-stained waters). It's also a great surface to attach a small Anubias or moss. If you prefer clearer water, soak it first to reduce the initial tannin release.
Preparation: New driftwood leaches tannins that tint the water a natural tea color (harmless, and many aquascapers love the blackwater look). To reduce it, soak the wood for a few days to a couple of weeks, changing the water, before adding it. Most woods need weighting or anchoring until waterlogged enough to sink.
