Worn Wood is nature’s own sculpture-shaped over decades by the harsh forces of water, wind, and sun. With its brown to yellowish tone and smooth, eroded texture, this wood tells a story of exposure and endurance.
Each piece is naturally sculpted, offering a wabi-sabi aesthetic full of character and grounded presence. Its heavier density makes most pieces naturally sinkable, eliminating the need for prolonged soaking or additional anchoring.
The Small size (10–20 cm) is perfect for nano layouts or detailed accents, while Medium (20–30 cm) and Large (30–50 cm) pieces make strong, expressive statements-ideal for ryoboku-style aquascapes and nature-inspired compositions.
The WIO difference: Carefully curated for shape, texture, and natural weathering, Worn Wood is a material of expression-sculpted not by tools, but by time.

Usage
Preparation and Handling Precautions
- Curing Recommended: While many pieces sink immediately, curing is advised for aquariums.
-
Basic Curing:
- Soak in warm water for 24–48 hours.
- Rinse thoroughly before placing. -
Intensive Curing (for tanks with livestock):
- Boil for 30–60 minutes to remove excess tannins.
- Soak in clean water with daily changes until the water clears. - Gradual Introduction: Especially in smaller systems, introduce pieces slowly and monitor parameters.
Initial Buoyancy
- Most Worn Wood pieces are heavy and sink naturally. If needed, secure temporarily using WIO’s ScapeGlue Kits or anchors.
Natural Organic Material
- Each piece is uniquely shaped-variations in form, weight, and color are to be expected and celebrated.
Water Monitoring
- Some tannin release may occur during initial weeks.
- Maintain kH ≥ 3 to buffer and stabilize pH.
- Test pH, kH, and gH weekly during the initial setup.
- Perform partial water changes as needed to manage water tint.
- Biofilm or saprolegnia may appear temporarily-this is a normal, beneficial stage. Remove manually if preferred; it will subside over time.
Placement
- Grounded & Organic: Use horizontally to mimic drifted logs or vertically for weathered stumps.
- Pair with aged rocks, mosses, or fine substrates to enhance the timeworn aesthetic.
- Ideal for both naturalistic ryoboku and rustic wabi-sabi styles.
