White Fin Ornatus
White Fin Ornatus (Hyphessobrycon ornatus) is a graceful and elegant tetra from the Amazon basin that is closely related to the White Fin Tetra (H. bentosi) and the Rosy Tetra (H. rosaceus), but has its own distinct character. The silver-pink to pale rose body is accented by vivid white tips on the dorsal fin — the fin is taller and more dramatically pointed in males than in most related species, creating an almost sail-like profile that is immediately eye-catching. Red and black fin markings add further contrast, completing a fish of genuine refinement and elegance.
Feeding & Care Tip: Hikari Micro Pellets make an excellent daily staple. Supplement 2–3× per week with Hikari Frozen or Freeze-Dried Bloodworms or Hikari Frozen or Freeze-Dried Baby Brine Shrimp to maintain best condition and encourage the development of the full dorsal fin extension in males. Feed small amounts 2–3 times daily.
Native to sluggish tributaries, side channels, and forest lakes of the Amazon basin in Brazil and Peru, H. ornatus is found in tannin-stained blackwater with soft, slightly acidic conditions and abundant submerged woody structure — roots, fallen branches, and overhanging riparian vegetation. In the aquarium, a planted setup with some shade, dark substrate, and soft slightly acidic water produces the richest silver-pink body color and the most vivid white dorsal fin tip.
This species belongs to the classic ornate tetra complex — a group of closely related Hyphessobrycon species that have historically caused confusion in the trade due to their similar appearance. The White Fin Ornatus is distinguished from its relative the White Fin Tetra (H. bentosi) primarily by the more pointed, sail-like dorsal fin and subtly different body proportions. Both are excellent aquarium fish, and the two can be kept together in a mixed school where the slight differences between the species become an interesting and educational display.
Keep in groups of at least eight, preferably ten or more. Males develop their most dramatic dorsal fin extensions when kept in a mixed-sex group and will regularly spread and display their fins to one another in harmless competition — a beautiful and entertaining behavior. Completely peaceful with all non-predatory species. Natural companions include other small tetras, dwarf cichlids such as Apistogramma, small Corydoras, and pencilfish. Particularly effective when kept alongside the White Fin Tetra (H. bentosi) for a side-by-side comparison of these elegant relatives.
