Western Rainbow
Western Rainbow (Melanotaenia australis) is one of Australia's most widely distributed rainbowfish, native to the river systems of Western Australia and the Northern Territory. Males display a warm pink-red body with iridescent blue-silver scaling along the flanks and vivid red fins. It is a robust, adaptable species that tolerates a wider range of conditions than many rainbowfish.
Feeding & Care Tip: Sera Vipan Tropical Flakes and Hikari Micro Pellets make excellent daily staples. Supplement 2–3× per week with Hikari Frozen or Freeze-Dried Bloodworms. Crush flakes for juveniles; soak pellets.
Native to river systems of Western Australia and the Northern Territory, including the Ord, Fitzroy, and Fortescue river drainages. This species inhabits a wide variety of habitats — from clear rivers to turbid pools — making it one of the most adaptable rainbowfish in the hobby.
Keep in groups of at least six with mixed sexes. Males display actively with fin-spreading and color intensification. Completely peaceful with other medium to large community fish. Its hardiness and adaptability make it an excellent choice for aquarists new to rainbowfish.
A well-planted aquarium with open swimming space in the center replicates the rainbowfish's natural riverine habitat. These are active, fast-swimming fish that appreciate length more than height — a longer tank allows them to build up speed and display properly. Good filtration and regular partial water changes are important, as rainbowfish are sensitive to deteriorating water quality. Avoid very small or slow-moving tankmates that may be outcompeted at feeding time.
