Venustus Goby (Lentipes venustus) is one of the most spectacularly colored freshwater gobies in the world — and one of the rarest available in the aquarium hobby. Males display brilliant electric blue coloration across much of the body, with the ventral half of the head a vivid red — a color combination that rivals any reef fish. The species name venustus comes from Latin meaning "beautiful," "elegant," or "graceful," a name that perfectly captures the extraordinary appearance of this fish. Native to clear, fast-flowing freshwater streams in the D'Entrecasteaux Islands of Milne Bay Province, Papua New Guinea, where it inhabits mountainous terrain with cool, oxygen-rich, pristine water.
Feeding & Care Tip: Feed a varied carnivore diet: Hikari Micro Pellets as a daily staple, supplemented with Hikari Frozen Bloodworms, Hikari Frozen Daphnia, and Hikari Frozen Mysis Shrimp 2–3 times per week. Unlike Stiphodon and Sicyopterus gobies which graze algae, Lentipes gobies are carnivores — do not rely on algae or biofilm as a food source. Feed small amounts twice daily.
Lentipes venustus is an amphidromous species — adults live and spawn in freshwater streams, the larvae hatch and drift downstream to the ocean where they develop in the marine plankton before migrating back upstream to freshwater as juveniles. This lifecycle produces fish with remarkable physical adaptations: the modified pelvic fins form a suction disc that allows juveniles to climb waterfalls and navigate torrential current on their return journey upstream. In the aquarium, this translates to a fish that is an expert climber and escape artist — a tightly fitting lid is essential.
Provide a mature, well-established aquarium with excellent water quality, strong flow, high dissolved oxygen, smooth river rock or slate substrate, and ample hiding places among rocks and driftwood. Water temperature should be maintained on the cooler side given the highland stream origin of this species. Males are territorial toward each other but peaceful toward other species. Best kept as a single male with one or two females, or alongside peaceful small fish that occupy different water column levels.
Lentipes venustus is virtually unknown in US aquarium stores. This is a genuine trophy fish for goby and rare fish enthusiasts — a species that generates significant excitement among the freshwater community when it becomes available.
