Description

Trapdoor Snail

Trapdoor Snail (Viviparus malleatus), also known as the Japanese Trapdoor Snail, is one of the best and most popular pond snails available — a hardy, cold-tolerant species that provides genuine algae and detritus control in outdoor ponds year-round, including through winter in most of the continental United States. The smooth, rounded shell ranges from olive-green to brown with faint banding, and the distinctive operculum (trapdoor) seals tightly when the snail retreats into its shell.

⚠ Copper Warning: Copper is fatal to all snails — even trace amounts. Never use copper-based medications or treatments in any aquarium housing snails. Check the ingredients of any fish medication before adding it to a snail tank. If in doubt, move snails to a separate container before treating.

Native to East Asia — Japan, China, and Korea — where it inhabits slow-moving rivers, lakes, and ponds. Introduced widely across North America, the Japanese Trapdoor Snail has become a staple of the pond keeping hobby for its cold hardiness, active grazing, and controllable reproduction. Unlike many other pond snails, Trapdoor Snails are livebearers — they give birth to fully-formed miniature snails rather than laying eggs, and population growth is slow and manageable.

Trapdoor Snails can survive Pennsylvania winters outdoors — they burrow into the pond substrate as temperatures drop and become dormant, re-emerging in spring. Introduce them when water temperatures are above 50°F. They are safe with koi, goldfish, and other pond fish, and will not eat healthy aquatic plants. Recommended stocking is approximately 1–2 snails per 10 gallons of pond volume, or around 10 per 100 square feet of pond surface area.

Pond Care Tip: Trapdoor Snails are excellent pond scavengers — they graze on algae, biofilm, and organic detritus continuously. In established ponds with healthy algae growth, supplemental feeding is minimal. If desired, supplement with Glasgarten Snail Dinner and Hikari Sinking Wafers. Glasgarten Mineral Junkie Treats and Glasgarten Mineral Treats support shell health. Trapdoor Snails are livebearers — population growth is slow and controllable.
