Süsswassertang is a botanically fascinating aquatic liverwort producing flat, ruffled, lettuce-like thalli with a distinctively unusual appearance unlike any conventional aquarium moss or fern. The broad, ruffled sheets of green tissue create an organic, irregular texture that grows in a distinctly different way from all other aquarium plants — neither rooted, attached, nor floating in the conventional sense, but settling loosely along the substrate or floating gently at the water column.

Planting tip: Susswassertang should be attached to driftwood, rock, or mesh with its fronds exposed to the water column. Use cotton thread or aquarium-safe adhesive to secure it, and the plant will anchor itself naturally over time. Good water circulation supports healthy growth.

As a liverwort rather than a true moss, Süsswassertang spreads through small lobes rather than spores and grows best when left relatively undisturbed. It can float freely at the water surface or settle along the bottom depending on its density and flow conditions. The plant appreciates stable water parameters and is sensitive to strong disturbance — once settled in a position it prefers to be left to grow without frequent relocation.

This easy plant grows under low to moderate lighting with CO₂ optional. Temperatures between 68 and 78°F and a pH of 6.0 to 8.0 provide comfortable conditions. Regular gentle fertilization supports healthy, vigorous thallus growth. The plant grows at a moderate pace once established in stable conditions and can develop into a substantial colony over time.
