Rotala Rotundifolia Blood Red

Rotala Rotundifolia Blood Red is a vivid cultivar selected for particularly intense, saturated blood-red coloration — one of the deepest reds achievable in the rotundifolia group and a compelling contrast plant for high-tech aquascapes where maximum red impact is the design goal. The blood-red intensity under high light and CO₂ creates a background display of remarkable color saturation that defines the warm end of the rotundifolia color spectrum.

Care tip: Rotala Rotundifolia Blood Red grows best in high lighting with CO₂ required. Maintain temperatures of 72–82°F and pH 5.5–7.0. Regular liquid fertilization supports healthy growth and best coloration.

Growing to 6 to 12 inches, Blood Red is a compact background to midground plant that maintains its intense red with regular trimming under consistent high-tech conditions. The blood-red coloration is most saturated in new, actively growing tips under high light — regular trimming cycles that replace old stems with fresh, vivid new growth are essential for maintaining the intense color throughout the planting.

As an advanced plant, Blood Red requires CO₂ injection and high lighting. Temperatures between 72 and 82°F and a pH of 5.5 to 7.0 — with soft water implied — provide comfortable conditions. Consistent iron-rich fertilization is particularly important for maintaining the intense blood-red pigmentation that defines this cultivar. Without adequate iron the deep red fades toward the less saturated tones of standard rotundifolia forms.

In the aquascape, Rotala Rotundifolia Blood Red creates one of the deepest, most intensely saturated red color experiences available from the rotundifolia group. As the chart accurately notes, it is ideal for contrast planting — the blood-red intensity creates maximum warm-cool color contrast against any green or blue-green plant in the composition. Groups of Blood Red in the background create a concentrated, intense red field of striking visual power.

Rotala Rotundifolia Blood Red is the most intensely colored cultivar in the rotundifolia group — a demanding but visually extraordinary plant for high-tech aquarists who want maximum red saturation from a reliable and accessible Rotala species. Its blood-red intensity makes it one of the most powerful warm-toned background plants available.
