Rhino Pleco
Rhino Pleco
Rhino Pleco (Pterygoplichthys scrophus) is a large, robust loricariid with distinctive horn-like dermal protrusions above the eyes — the 'rhino' features that give this fish its memorable name. A powerful algae grazer that is effective at controlling algae in larger aquariums.
Feeding & Care Tip: Hikari Mini Algae Wafers placed on glass and surfaces are the ideal staple. Supplement with blanched vegetables and Hikari Sinking Wafers. Supplement protein 2–3 times per week with Hikari Frozen or Freeze-Dried Bloodworms. Strong filtration is essential — large plecos produce significant waste.
Native to rivers of Ecuador and Peru — the Amazon and Marañón drainage. Related to the common Sailfin Pleco and Janitor Fish. A powerful and effective algae grazer that grows large. As with all Pterygoplichthys species, captive populations have established in Florida and Texas after aquarium releases.
Singly or with large, robust fish. Peaceful toward mid-water species but may bother smaller bottom-dwellers. Large aquarium of 75+ gallons needed for an adult. Powerful filtration essential.
Responsible Ownership Note: Pterygoplichthys species have established invasive populations in Florida, Texas, and other warm-climate US states after being released by aquarists. Never release any aquarium fish into natural waterways. If you can no longer keep this fish, contact a local aquarium club, fish store, or rehoming service.
