Red & Blue Colombian Tetra
Red & Blue Colombian Tetra
Red & Blue Colombian Tetra (Hyphessobrycon columbianus) is one of the most dramatically colored tetras available — a large, robust Hyphessobrycon with vivid electric blue iridescence on the upper body and vivid red fins, creating one of the most striking two-element color combinations in the tetra family. Described in 2000, relatively recently added to the hobby.
Feeding & Care Tip: Sera Vipan Tropical Flakes and Hikari Micro Pellets make excellent daily staples. Supplement 2–3× per week with Hikari Frozen or Freeze-Dried Bloodworms, Hikari Frozen or Freeze-Dried Baby Brine Shrimp, or Hikari Vibra Bites. Feed small amounts 2–3 times daily.
Native to the Acandí River drainage of northwestern Colombia — the Darién region near the Panamanian border. Described in 2000.
Keep in groups of at least 8. The blue body and red fins are most vivid in well-conditioned fish in moderately soft water. Males are slightly larger and more vividly colored than females.
One of the finest tetras for a show aquarium — the blue-and-red combination at this scale is among the most visually impactful of any schooling fish.
