Prambanan Snail (Thiara winteri) is a distinctive tower-shaped freshwater snail from Indonesia, named for the historic Prambanan temple complex on Java. The tall, cone-shaped shell is covered in ridges and small spiky nodules along each whorl, giving it a rugged, textured look in brownish-bronze to dark gray tones — a clear step up in visual interest from the smooth-shelled Malaysian Trumpet Snail it superficially resembles. Beyond looks, the Prambanan Snail is a genuinely useful cleanup crew member, spending its time working through the substrate rather than climbing glass or grazing plants.
Thiara winteri belongs to the family Thiaridae, the same family that includes the ubiquitous Malaysian Trumpet Snail, and shares that group's biology: it is plant-safe, will not bother ornamental shrimp, and reproduces by parthenogenesis — females can produce young without a mate present. Population growth is generally slow and manageable in a normally maintained tank, and the snail will not overrun an aquarium the way some other prolific species can.
Prambanan Snails are omnivorous scavengers, feeding primarily on algae, biofilm, and organic detritus in the substrate, along with leftover food and decaying plant matter. They readily accept sinking wafers, blanched vegetables, and other prepared snail foods as a supplement to what they find naturally. A sand or fine-gravel substrate is strongly preferred, since it allows the snail to burrow and sift the way it does in the wild; coarse gravel makes this much more difficult.
