Description
Pothos Cutting
Pothos, botanically Epipremnum aureum, is one of the most widely recognized houseplants in the world — a vigorous Southeast Asian vining plant that is used creatively in aquarium and paludarium setups where its roots are submerged in the tank water while the leaves trail or climb above the waterline. The roots are remarkable natural biological filters, absorbing excess nutrients from the water column with extraordinary efficiency.
Care note: Pothos Cutting is best grown in emersed or terrarium conditions rather than fully submerged. Maintain consistent humidity and temperatures of 65–85°F for healthy, vibrant growth.
In aquarium use, Pothos is positioned so that its stems rest on the tank rim or nearby surface with roots hanging into the water while all leaves remain strictly above the waterline. The vining habit allows considerable creative placement — trailing from riparium setups, climbing supports above open-top aquariums, or cascading from elevated positions. The plant grows vigorously in this application and the root nutrient absorption is genuinely significant.
This easy plant grows in low to moderate lighting without CO₂ supplementation. The wide temperature range of 65 to 85°F reflects the genuine thermal adaptability of this tropical species. A pH of 6.0 to 7.5 provides comfortable conditions. No substrate is needed — roots hang freely in the water. Regular pruning of the vining stems manages growth above the tank.
In the aquascape, Pothos provides natural nutrient export through its root system alongside creative visual interest through its trailing or climbing vining growth above the waterline. In open-top aquariums and ripariums, well-placed Pothos cuttings create a naturalistic, living border that blurs the distinction between aquatic and terrestrial environments.
Pothos Cutting is a practically effective and creatively interesting plant for open-top aquariums and ripariums where natural nutrient export and trailing vine aesthetics above the waterline are desired. Its extraordinary adaptability and effective nutrient absorption make it one of the most practical riparium plants available.
