Potamogeton gayi

Potamogeton gayi is an elegant South American aquatic plant producing long, narrow, olive-green to reddish-brown leaves on gracefully trailing stems — a flowing, naturalistic background plant that creates organic, ribbon-like movement in the aquarium current. Unlike most stem plants that grow rigidly upright, Potamogeton gayi has a naturally trailing and spreading quality that gives it a distinctly wild, river-like aesthetic well suited to biotope and nature-style compositions.

Care tip: Potamogeton gayi grows best in high lighting with CO₂ not required. Maintain temperatures of 64–78°F and pH 6.0–8.0. Regular fertilization supports healthy growth.

Growing to 8 to 20 inches, Potamogeton gayi is a background plant that adapts well to a wide pH range of 6.0 to 8.0 — unusual tolerance that makes it practical for community tanks including alkaline water setups where many background plants struggle. The narrow, slightly reddish-brown tinged leaves create a warm, fine-textured background presence quite different from typical broad-leaved background plants.

This easy plant requires no CO₂ supplementation despite its high light preference. The temperature range of 64 to 78°F reflects a genuine preference for cooler water — worth noting for tropical tanks running above 78°F. Regular fertilization maintains the healthy, trailing growth and the warm olive-reddish tone of the narrow leaves.

In the aquascape, Potamogeton gayi creates a naturalistic, flowing background of fine, trailing leaves that suits nature-style and South American biotope compositions. The trailing growth creates a river-current aesthetic unlike the more upright background plants. In tanks with alkaline water it is one of the few fine-leaved background plants that thrives reliably.

Potamogeton gayi is a graceful and practically adaptable background plant for aquarists who want fine-leaved, naturally trailing background coverage with exceptional pH tolerance. Its flowing growth and cool-water preference make it a distinctive and rewarding background species.
