Description

Philodendron

Philodendron Mayoi was described by Brazilian botanist Eduardo Gonçalves in 2000, native to the Cerrado region of central Brazil (the Federal District around Brasília and the state of Goiás). It's a scrambling, climbing species found growing on trees and rocks as well as creeping across the forest floor in seasonally dry tropical habitat, prized for deeply pinnatifid, finger-like leaves that resemble palm fronds — a genuinely distinctive look within the genus.

Note: as a freshly imported bare-root plant, this specimen typically arrives with just a few leaves — the photo shows a more mature, fuller specimen for reference.

Care tip: Let the soil dry out almost completely between waterings — this species tolerates drought far better than overwatering, reflecting its seasonally dry native habitat.

Give it bright indirect light, a well-draining, organically rich mix, and a coco or moss pole to climb — leaves grow noticeably larger as the plant ascends. It's often compared to genus Thaumatophyllum for its similar lobed leaf shape, but Mayoi is distinguished by its reddish petioles.

A relatively recent addition to houseplant collections — still uncommon compared to more mainstream Philodendron — this species stands out immediately for foliage that reads more like a fern or palm than a typical heart-shaped Philodendron leaf.
