Orange Marked Corydoras (Corydoras duplicareus) is one of the most visually striking corydoras in the hobby — and one of the rarest to encounter. The body is creamy white on the lower half, transitioning sharply to jet black along the dorsal surface, with a bold black mask across the eyes. The defining feature is a vivid orange-gold blaze that runs from just behind and above the eye forward to the dorsal fin, forming a striking V-shape when viewed from above. Closely related to and frequently confused with Corydoras adolfoi, which we also carry — the key distinction is that C. duplicareus has a broader dark body bar and a more intense, deeper orange marking. Native to the blackwater tributaries of the upper Rio Negro system in Brazil — pristine, tannin-stained waters with fine substrate and leaf litter.
Feeding & Care Tip: Hikari Sinking Wafers make an excellent daily staple — Sera Vipachips Tropical Wafers are a superb alternative. Supplement 2–3× per week with Hikari Frozen or Freeze-Dried Bloodworms or Hikari Frozen or Freeze-Dried Tubifex Worms to bring out the vivid orange marking. Feed near the substrate at lights-out.
Native to blackwater environments in the upper Rio Negro basin — soft, acidic, tannin-stained water with fine sandy or silty substrate, decomposing leaf litter, and driftwood. In the aquarium, soft water with a pH between 6.0 and 7.0 is strongly preferred. Fine sand substrate is essential — the delicate barbels that C. duplicareus uses to sift through the substrate are easily damaged by coarse gravel. Dense planting, shaded retreats under driftwood or leaf litter, and subdued lighting will keep this species at ease and most colorful.
Keep in groups of at least six — Corydoras are fundamentally schooling fish and a lone individual or small group will be stressed, inactive, and prone to illness. In proper groups they are bold, constantly active, and a constant source of activity at the bottom of the aquarium. Compatible with virtually all peaceful community fish — tetras, rasboras, dwarf cichlids, and other Corydoras species make excellent tankmates.
Corydoras duplicareus is genuinely uncommon in the trade — most stores carry C. adolfoi but rarely the true duplicareus. The two species can be kept together and will school loosely with each other, creating a striking display of nearly identical but subtly distinct fish.
