Masked Julie Rockdweller
Masked Julie
Masked Julie (Julidochromis transcriptus) is one of the smallest and most striking of the Julidochromis cichlids, reaching under 3 inches. Its torpedo-shaped body is boldly patterned in black with rows of white to cream spots and bars, and the long dorsal and tail fins are edged in electric blue — a dark, high-contrast "mask" pattern that makes it stand out against light rock. It is endemic to the rocky shorelines of northwestern Lake Tanganyika in Africa, where pairs claim a crevice among the boulders and rarely stray far from it.
⚠ Hard Water Required: Like all Lake Tanganyika cichlids, Masked Julies need hard, alkaline water. Keep pH 7.8–9.0 and GH 10–20 dGH. They are not suited to soft, acidic planted tanks.
Build the tank around rock: stacked stone with plenty of caves, crevices, and narrow gaps gives each pair a territory and the security they need to show their best behavior. Julies swim upside-down and sideways along rock faces, which is a big part of their charm. Pairs are territorial toward their own kind and other cave spawners, so plan one pair per section of rockwork.
A bonded pair will spawn in a cave and guard eggs and fry together; older fry often stay and help protect their younger siblings, slowly building a small family colony. Good tankmates include other Tanganyikan species of similar size such as shell-dwelling Lamprologus (e.g. L. ocellatus, N. multifasciatus), Cyprichromis, and Neolamprologus. Avoid large, aggressive Malawi mbuna and slow, timid community fish.
Feeding & Care Tip: Masked Julies are small-mouthed micro-predators that pick tiny invertebrates off the rocks. Feed Sera Vipan Tropical Flakes or a small sinking cichlid pellet as the daily staple, and add Hikari Frozen Baby Brine Shrimp, Hikari Frozen Daphnia, or Hikari Frozen Bloodworms several times a week. Feed small amounts once or twice a day.
