Longmouth Pipefish (Microphis heterosoma) is a freshwater pipefish from South and Southeast Asia, belonging to the same family as seahorses (Syngnathidae) and sharing their remarkable reproductive biology — it is the male that carries and incubates the eggs, attached to a specialized brood pouch on the underside of the body. Like its relatives, the Longmouth Pipefish is a master of ambush predation: its elongated, pipe-shaped body and slow, deliberate movements allow it to drift undetected through aquatic vegetation, snapping up small crustaceans and zooplankton with a rapid suction strike from its long, tubular snout.
⚠ Feeding Requirement: Freshwater pipefish are obligate live food feeders and will not accept prepared or frozen foods in most cases. They require a steady supply of live baby brine shrimp, live Daphnia, or live Moina to survive and thrive. Do not attempt to keep this species without a reliable live food source established before purchase. This is a specialist fish suitable only for experienced aquarists who can meet this feeding requirement consistently.
Native to slow-moving freshwater streams, rivers, ditches, and coastal brackish margins across South and Southeast Asia — including India, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, Myanmar, Thailand, and Indonesia. In nature it inhabits densely vegetated, still or slow-moving water where it hangs vertically or at an angle among plant stems, perfectly camouflaged. Water conditions in its natural range vary considerably; most specimens adapt well to neutral to slightly alkaline, moderately hard freshwater in captivity, though some keepers report success with a low-end brackish addition (SG 1.002–1.005) for long-term maintenance.
Best kept in a species-specific or near-species-specific aquarium of at least 15–20 gallons with abundant tall, thin-stemmed plants (Vallisneria, Sagittaria, Microsorum) among which the fish can drift and hunt. Do not keep with fast-moving fish, active midwater species, or anything large enough to harass them. Very small, slow-moving companions such as small Otocinclus or tiny Corydoras may be acceptable if feeding competition is not an issue. Avoid strong flow — these fish are not built for current.
Male pipefish develop a brood pouch on the ventral surface of the abdomen; after spawning the female deposits eggs into this pouch where the male fertilizes and incubates them until the fry are released as fully formed miniature pipefish. The fry require live microfoods (newly hatched baby brine shrimp, rotifers, Moina nauplii) from their first day. Captive breeding of freshwater pipefish is rarely achieved outside of dedicated specialist setups — but when successful it is one of the most extraordinary spectacles in the freshwater hobby.
Feeding & Care Tip: Live baby brine shrimp (freshly hatched) and live Daphnia or Moina are the only reliable foods for this species. Establish a live food culture before acquiring these fish. Some individuals may eventually accept frozen baby brine shrimp or Cyclops after long-term conditioning — but do not count on this. Feed small amounts continuously or 4–6 times daily, as pipefish have limited stomach capacity and need frequent feeding.
