Head and Tail Light Tetra
Head and Tail Light Tetra
Head and Tail Light Tetra (Hemigrammus ocellifer) is one of the oldest and most enduring aquarium tetras — kept since the 1930s and named for the vivid spots at the eye and caudal peduncle that resemble automobile headlights and taillights. The eye has a vivid red upper iris; the caudal spot reflects copper-gold. A classic aquarium fish with nearly a century of keeping history.
Feeding & Care Tip: Sera Vipan Tropical Flakes and Hikari Micro Pellets make excellent daily staples. Supplement 2–3× per week with Hikari Frozen or Freeze-Dried Bloodworms, Hikari Frozen or Freeze-Dried Baby Brine Shrimp, or Hikari Vibra Bites. Feed small amounts 2–3 times daily.
Native to the Amazon basin across Brazil, Peru, Bolivia, and Guyana — one of the widest distributions of any aquarium tetra, explaining its adaptability.
Keep in groups of at least 8. One of the most forgiving and adaptable tetras — tolerates a wide range of water conditions. Compatible with virtually all peaceful community fish.
An aquarium classic — the head and tail light spotting is still immediately attractive and the species remains deservedly popular.
