Description
Half Black Red Guppy
Half Black Red Guppy (Poecilia reticulata) is a classic and striking selectively bred guppy variety defined by its dramatic two-tone coloration — the rear half of the body is a deep, rich black that transitions sharply into vivid red on the caudal peduncle and tail, creating a bold, high-contrast pattern that stands out in any planted aquarium. The "half black" body base gives the red tail colors a depth and intensity that solid-colored guppies cannot match. These are bred as pairs, ensuring you receive both the colorful males and compatible females for a complete display.
Feeding & Care Tip: Hikari Micro Pellets make an ideal daily staple — small enough for guppy mouths and nutritionally balanced for maintaining vivid color and fin development. Supplement 3 times per week with Hikari Frozen Bloodworms or Hikari Freeze-Dried Daphnia to support conditioning and breeding. Feed small amounts 2–3 times daily rather than one large feeding.
Guppies are among the most adaptable and forgiving fish in the hobby — tolerant of a wide range of water conditions and compatible with virtually any peaceful community fish. The Half Black Red variety is best displayed in planted aquariums where the dark body and vivid red tail create maximum visual impact against green foliage. Males display constantly, spreading their fins and dancing for females and rival males, providing continuous movement and color in the mid to upper water column.
Livebearers that reproduce readily — females can store sperm and produce multiple broods from a single mating. If maintaining a breeding population, floating plants or fine-leaved stem plants provide refuge for fry. These specimens are sold as pairs, making it easy to establish a self-sustaining group. A classic aquarium fish with a timeless appeal, the Half Black Red Guppy is both a beginner-friendly introduction to the hobby and a satisfying display fish for experienced aquarists.
