Green Tiger Lotus
Green Tiger Lotus
Green Tiger Lotus is a beautiful and distinctive bulb plant from West Africa producing large, broad leaves with characteristic red or purple spotting on a green base — the spotted pattern giving the plant its tiger-inspired name. The combination of the bold leaf size, the spotted patterning, and the plant's ability to produce floating lily pads creates a multi-layered aquarium plant of considerable visual impact and natural grandeur.
Care tip: Green Tiger Lotus grows best in moderate lighting with CO₂ not required. Maintain temperatures of 72–82°F and pH 6.0–7.5. Regular liquid fertilization supports healthy growth and best coloration.
Like all tiger lotus varieties, Green Tiger Lotus grows vigorously once established, producing both submerged leaves near the substrate and eventually extending stems to produce floating lily pads at the water surface. Floating leaves should be managed with periodic trimming to prevent light from being blocked to lower plants. The submerged spotted leaves provide the most sustained aquarium display and are most visible when floating growth is controlled.
Green Tiger Lotus grows well under medium lighting without requiring CO₂ supplementation, making it accessible for low-tech planted tanks. Temperatures between 72 and 82°F and a pH of 6.0 to 7.5 suit this species well. A nutrient-rich substrate or root tabs support the bulb's energy storage and the production of the large, impressive leaves. The bulb should be planted with the top half exposed.
In the aquascape, Green Tiger Lotus creates a bold, architectural focal point in the midground to background of medium and larger aquariums. The spotted green leaves contrast dramatically with fine-leaved plants and solid-green species, and create a natural tropical atmosphere particularly appropriate in African biotope setups. Paired with darker red variants like Red Tiger Lotus, it creates beautiful color variation within the same species group.
Green Tiger Lotus is a captivating and distinctive aquarium plant that brings the beauty and drama of tropical water gardens to the freshwater aquarium. Its spotted foliage and vigorous growth make it a rewarding centerpiece plant for any setup with adequate space.
