Description

Golden Sailfin Molly

Golden Sailfin Molly (Poecilia latipinna) is one of the most dramatic and eye-catching livebearers available in the aquarium hobby. The "Sailfin" designation refers to the spectacular dorsal fin of mature males — a tall, flowing, flag-like structure that can be as tall as the fish's body itself, creating a magnificent silhouette as the male displays to females and rival males. The Golden color form replaces the typical dark-spotted silver of the wild species with a warm, metallic golden-yellow that shimmers brilliantly under aquarium lighting. These are collected at 5.5 cm — fully mature specimens with developed finnage — from Singapore, where decades of aquaculture have produced exceptionally robust and colorful strains.

Feeding & Care Tip: Hikari Micro Pellets make an excellent daily staple, supplemented with Hikari Algae Wafers — Sailfin Mollies are enthusiastic grazers that will consume algae growing on tank surfaces. Supplement with Hikari Frozen Bloodworms or Hikari Frozen Brine Shrimp 2–3 times per week to bring out peak color and condition in males. Vegetable-based foods like blanched zucchini are also relished.

Poecilia latipinna naturally inhabits coastal marshes, brackish estuaries, and tidal rivers from the Carolinas to the Yucatán Peninsula — a species evolved for a wide range of salinity conditions. In the aquarium, Golden Sailfin Mollies are exceptionally adaptable and thrive across a broad range of water conditions, from pure freshwater to full marine salinity. They are particularly striking in slightly brackish setups (1 teaspoon of marine salt per 5 gallons) where the salt supports their immune system, enhances coloration, and reduces susceptibility to common livebearer ailments.

Males are spectacular display fish that spend much of their time performing elaborate courtship displays — raising the tall dorsal fin to full height, arching the body, and circling females with impressive athleticism. A ratio of at least two females per male is recommended to prevent any single female from being excessively pursued. Females give birth to live fry every 4–6 weeks. Completely peaceful with all community fish. Outstanding tankmates include other livebearers, tetras, corydoras, and gobies. These are sold as pairs to ensure you receive a compatible male and female.
