Golden Julie
Golden Julie (Julidochromis ornatus) is one of the most attractively patterned cichlids from Lake Tanganyika. The pale golden to cream body is adorned with bold black horizontal stripes running the length of the fish, creating a clean, graphic pattern that stands out clearly in any aquarium. Despite its striking appearance, it is one of the more manageable Julidochromis species.
Feeding & Care Tip: Hikari Cichlid Bio-Gold is the ideal staple — Hikari Micro Pellets as backup. Supplement 2–3× per week with Hikari Frozen or Freeze-Dried Baby Brine Shrimp or Hikari Frozen or Freeze-Dried Tubifex Worms to enhance coloration and encourage breeding. Feed small amounts 2–3 times daily.
Lake Tanganyika is one of the world's oldest and most chemically stable lakes — its water is hard, alkaline, and crystal-clear. Replicating these conditions is essential. Use crushed coral or aragonite substrate to maintain alkalinity, provide excellent filtration and water clarity, and perform regular partial water changes. Tanganyikan cichlids are highly sensitive to poor water quality and must never be kept in soft or acidic conditions.
Julidochromis form strong pair bonds and are devoted cave spawners with biparental care. Keep as a pair or small group. Territorial with conspecifics but tolerant of other Tanganyikan species. An interesting trait: sex roles can reverse — females sometimes take on the dominant role in pair defense.
Native to the rocky shorelines of northern and northwestern Lake Tanganyika. Julidochromis are rock-dwelling cichlids that spend their lives picking invertebrates from rock surfaces. They appreciate complex rockwork with multiple crevices and caves. The Golden Julie is an excellent entry point into Julidochromis keeping.
