Description

Giant Kuhli Loach

Giant Kuhli Loach (Pangio myersi) is the larger, more substantial relative of the classic Kuhli Loach — retaining the same eel-like body, sinuous movement, and deeply peaceful temperament while growing to a noticeably more visible 4–5 inches as an adult. Where standard Kuhli Loaches tend to vanish into the substrate, the Giant Kuhli becomes a genuine presence in the aquarium once established, moving purposefully through the lower levels and appearing with increasing confidence as the tank matures. Distinguished from P. kuhlii and P. semicincta by its pattern of larger dark spots and a predominantly black caudal fin. Native to slow-moving forest streams, peat swamps, oxbows, and backwaters across Thailand, Laos, Cambodia, and Vietnam — often associated with soft, tannin-stained blackwater environments.

Feeding & Care Tip: Hikari Sinking Wafers and Sera Viformo Nature Bottom Feeder Tablets make excellent daily staples — place them near the substrate after lights out when Giant Kuhli Loaches are most active. Supplement 2–3× per week with Hikari Frozen or Freeze-Dried Bloodworms or Hikari Frozen or Freeze-Dried Tubifex Worms. These are nocturnal foragers — feed at lights-out.

Giant Kuhli Loaches require fine, smooth sand substrate — they burrow and forage constantly, and rough gravel or coarse substrates will damage their delicate barbels and ventral skin. Dense planting, driftwood tangles, caves, and a generous scattering of dried leaf litter provide the cover and security this species needs to thrive. In well-structured aquascapes that mirror their natural habitat, they become markedly bolder and more active during daylight hours as the tank matures. Keep a tight-fitting lid — like all Pangio, they are expert escape artists.

Keep in groups of at least five — Giant Kuhli Loaches are social fish that are demonstrably healthier, bolder, and more active in groups. In groups they will pile together in shared hiding spots, weave through the substrate together, and emerge more frequently during the day. Completely peaceful with all community fish and safe with adult shrimp in well-planted tanks. An ideal addition to larger planted aquascapes where their size and movement add genuine visual depth to the lower levels.

Most specimens in the hobby are wild-caught from Thailand and Southeast Asia — breeding in captivity is rare and requires specific environmental conditions. Wild specimens acclimate well to stable aquarium conditions and are hardy once established.
