Manzanita is widely considered one of the finest aquascaping woods there is, and this Stag Horn grade shows why — slender, antler-like branches that fork and taper into delicate twigs, exactly the silhouette you want for nature-style "tree" and forest layouts. The wood comes from shrubs of the genus Arctostaphylos, native to the dry hills of western North America (the name is Spanish for "little apple," after the shrub's tiny apple-like berries). Because the pieces are naturally weathered and sun-aged in the desert for years before harvest, most of their organic compounds have already leached away — which is the secret behind manzanita's standout traits: it's dense, hard, decay-resistant, and notably low in tannins.
Aquascaping Tip: Manzanita's thin, twisting limbs are made for fine detail. Start with a single statement branch and nail its placement before adding more — then interlock a second or third piece so the branches appear to grow from one trunk, building a convincing tree or root system. The forking tips are ideal anchor points for moss, Anubias, and Bucephalandra; tie or glue them on and let the wood disappear under greenery as the scape matures.
As it settles in, manzanita's bleached, desert-pale surface deepens to warm browns and tans — not decay, just the wood's true color emerging as it hydrates. It lasts for years submerged without breaking down, which is why so many aquascapers treat a good manzanita branch as a long-term centerpiece rather than a disposable decoration. Because each branch is a unique natural piece, the exact shape and branching will vary, so every layout you build is one of a kind.
Preparation & What to Expect: Dry manzanita floats, so soak it (or boil smaller pieces) until it's waterlogged enough to sink on its own — depending on size that can take anywhere from a few days to a couple of weeks, and you can weigh it down with a rock in the meantime. It's low in tannins compared to most driftwood, but "low" isn't "none," so expect a light amber tint at first; a few water changes or some activated carbon will clear it if you prefer crystal water. A soft white biofilm in the first weeks is normal curing — harmless to fish and shrimp, which happily graze it, and it fades as the tank matures.
