Description
FENESTRATARUM CULUM
Fenestratarum Culum is a rare rheophytic aroid described in 2014 from Kalimantan Barat (West Kalimantan), Indonesian Borneo, and is one of only two known species in the genus Fenestratarum, closely related to Bucephalandra, Aridarum, and Piptospatha. In the wild it grows along fast-flowing, rocky stream margins, and its narrow, glossy, arching leaves — only about 5mm wide — give it an almost grass-like appearance that's unusual for an aroid.
Care tip: Fenestratarum Culum is epiphytic, like Bucephalandra — never bury the rhizome in substrate, as this will cause it to melt and rot. Attach it to driftwood or rock instead. It can be grown fully submerged in the aquarium or emersed in a high-humidity terrarium or paludarium; stable water parameters and CO2 injection improve growth either way.
In the aquarium, give Fenestratarum Culum low to medium lighting, stable water parameters, and quality fertilization — CO2 injection isn't required but noticeably improves growth rate and leaf color. It is a slow grower, so patience matters more than intervention, and it adapts well once settled onto its hardscape anchor point.
Attached to driftwood or rock, Fenestratarum Culum's slender, stiffly arching leaves add a delicate, grass-like texture that stands apart from broader-leaved aroids like Anubias or Bucephalandra. It suits jungle- and forest-style aquascapes and pairs naturally with other Bornean rheophytes and mosses in a streamside-style hardscape display.
As one of only two described Fenestratarum species — a genus only recognized by science in 2014 — Culum is a genuine rarity for collectors interested in Bornean rheophytic aroids, and remains little known even within the specialist aroid community.
