Dwarf Papyrus
Dwarf Papyrus
Dwarf Papyrus, botanically Cyperus haspan, is a graceful, grass-like wetland plant producing slender, arching stems with a distinctive papyrus-like appearance that creates naturalistic, vertical structure in aquarium and paludarium setups. One of the few Cyperus species genuinely suited to aquatic environments — best grown emersed or semi-emersed where its graceful stems arch above the waterline, creating an authentic wetland atmosphere that suits open-top and paludarium compositions.
Care note: Dwarf Papyrus is best grown in emersed or terrarium conditions with consistent humidity rather than fully submerged. Maintain temperatures of 70–80°F and a humid environment for healthy, vibrant growth.
Growing to 12 to 30 inches depending on conditions and growth duration, Dwarf Papyrus is a substantial plant that suits larger aquariums and paludarium setups where its height can be accommodated and appreciated. In aquarium use it is most practical in open-top setups where the tall, graceful stems can grow freely above the waterline. Nutrient-rich substrate or regular fertilization supports the most vigorous, architecturally impressive growth.
This moderate plant grows in moderate to high lighting with CO₂ recommended for aquarium use. Temperatures between 70 and 80°F provide comfortable conditions for this tropical and subtropical species. A pH of 6.0 to 7.5 suits this adaptable plant. Regular fertilization supports the continuous stem production that creates the most impressive, full papyrus display.
In the aquascape and paludarium, Dwarf Papyrus creates authentic wetland atmosphere through its graceful, arching stems. In open-top aquariums the tall stems emerging above the waterline create a compelling natural vertical element. In paludariums it provides genuine swamp and wetland botanical character alongside aquatic plants. The chart notes it as one of the few Cyperus for aquariums — an accurate and important distinction.
Dwarf Papyrus is a graceful, architecturally distinctive wetland plant for open-top aquariums and paludariums where its arching stems can develop above the waterline. Its naturalistic wetland character and easy care make it a practical and visually distinctive vertical accent for aquatic terrarium environments.
