Dainty Corydoras
Dainty Corydoras (Corydoras habrosus), also known as the Salt and Pepper Corydoras, is one of the three true dwarf corydoras species. The pale silver-cream body is dusted with fine dark speckling — giving the fish the salt-and-pepper appearance its alternative name describes — with a small dark blotch at the base of the dorsal fin. The species name habrosus means 'graceful' or 'delicate' in Greek, an apt description.
Feeding & Care Tip: Unlike most corydoras, the Dainty Corydoras feeds more in the mid-water zone and close to the substrate. Hikari Micro Pellets work well as a daily staple. Sera Vipachips Tropical Wafers crushed fine are an excellent alternative. Supplement 2–3× per week with Hikari Frozen or Freeze-Dried Baby Brine Shrimp. Feed small amounts 2–3 times daily.
Native to the upper Rio Orinoco basin in eastern Colombia and western Venezuela, this species inhabits soft, slightly acidic, slow-moving streams with sandy bottoms and leaf litter. In the aquarium it appreciates soft to medium, slightly acidic water with fine sand substrate, gentle filtration, and planted areas for cover.
Keep in groups of at least eight, preferably ten or more. The Dainty Corydoras spends more time close to the substrate than the Pygmy Corydoras but still schools actively. In a large group they are bold and constantly moving. Completely peaceful with all non-predatory species including shrimp and other nano fish.
Fine sand substrate is strongly recommended. This is a delicate species that is more sensitive to poor water quality than the more robust larger corydoras. Regular water changes and pristine conditions are important for long-term health.
