Curly Bamboo
Curly Bamboo
Curly Bamboo, botanically Dracaena sanderiana in its spiral stem form, is the distinctive curled-stem version of the popular Lucky Bamboo plant — producing the same segmented, jointed stems with attractive curling or spiral training and bright green foliage. Not a true aquatic plant or true bamboo — it must be kept with foliage above the waterline at all times, though roots tolerate and benefit from water submersion.
Care note: Curly Bamboo is best grown in emersed or terrarium conditions with consistent humidity rather than fully submerged. Maintain temperatures of 65–80°F and a humid environment for healthy, vibrant growth.
Like straight Lucky Bamboo, Curly Bamboo is most effectively used in open-top aquariums where the curled stems grow above the waterline with roots reaching into the water below. The distinctive curled stem form creates a more artistic, sculptural accent compared to the straight form — the curved and spiraling stems add organic movement and visual interest to any open-top or riparium display.
This easy plant grows in low to moderate lighting without CO₂ supplementation. The broad temperature range of 65 to 80°F and a pH of 6.0 to 7.5 reflect genuine adaptability. The plant is long-lived and low-maintenance in appropriate conditions. As the chart notes it must be kept above the waterline — essential guidance for successful maintenance.
In the aquarium and paludarium, Curly Bamboo provides artistic, sculptural stem accents whose curved and spiraling form adds a decorative, designed quality to open-top display compositions. The curved stems create a more organic, interesting visual accent than straight Lucky Bamboo. It pairs well with floating plants and emersed aquatic plants.
Curly Bamboo is a distinctive, easy-care decorative accent for open-top aquariums and ripariums where its artistic curled stem form can develop above the waterline. The sculptural curved stems and easy long-term care make it a practical and visually interesting decorative element in aquatic display environments.
