Description
CRYPTOCORYNE SCHULZEI
Cryptocoryne Schulzei is a genuinely rare crypt with one of the narrowest known distributions in the genus — found only in Johore, Malaysia, and on a single island off the east coast of Sumatra, growing in a handful of small streams and rivers. Its colors range from green to brown depending on growing conditions.
Care tip: Schulzei may experience melt in its early stages after introduction — allow the plant time to establish before attempting to move or propagate it, as with all Cryptocoryne.
This species wants a nutrient-rich substrate and stable, moderately soft to slightly acidic water that reflects the small blackwater streams it comes from in the wild. As with all crypts, avoid moving it once established, and keep parameter changes minimal.
Schulzei works well as a foreground-to-midground plant, its compact size and variable brown-green coloring suiting biotope or nature-style aquascapes. Given its narrow native range, it makes a genuinely uncommon specimen plant for collectors seeking true species rarity.
In the wild, Cryptocoryne Schulzei is considered threatened by over-collection and changing land use around its limited native streams — a reminder of how narrow this species' natural range really is, and part of what makes correctly identified, nursery-propagated stock worth seeking out.
