Description

CRYPTOCORYNE FUSCA BROWN

Cryptocoryne Fusca Brown is a Bornean crypt native to West Kalimantan, Sarawak, and Belitung Island off the coast of Sumatra. It forms a low rosette of warm brown leaves and was historically confused with, and sold under, the name Cryptocoryne longicauda — the two species have since been correctly separated. Fusca is a genuine rarity, rarely available commercially even among specialist Cryptocoryne collectors.

Care tip: Like all Cryptocoryne, Fusca Brown may melt after being introduced to a new aquarium — this is a normal acclimation response, not a sign of a dying plant, and it recovers fully once settled with stable water parameters.

Cryptocoryne Fusca Brown does best in a nutrient-rich substrate with stable, slightly acidic water that mirrors its native Bornean streams. It is a slow grower, so patience matters more than intervention — avoid moving it once planted and avoid unnecessary parameter swings. Moderate lighting brings out the warm brown tones in the leaves without pushing the plant toward stress.

As a midground rosette plant, Fusca Brown provides warm brown color contrast against greener planting and pairs naturally with mosses, other Bornean Cryptocoryne, and driftwood-based hardscape. Its compact size and understated coloration make it a good choice for aquascapers who want genuine species rarity without an oversized centerpiece plant.

Fusca Brown is one of the harder-to-source Cryptocoryne species in the hobby, and its history of misidentification as C. longicauda means true, correctly labeled stock is uncommon even among specialist importers — a real find for Cryptocoryne collectors.
